Based on www.total-eclipse-2008.com, there are at least 4 obvious advantages:

  1. Eclipse path in Siberia passes big cities, while in China it goes through the difficult to access regions near the Gobi desert.
  2. Eclipse duration in Siberia is a bit longer which is 2:14 to 2:27 minutes, while in China it is less than 2:10 minutes.
  3. Eclipse in Siberia will be seen at higher solar angle which is more convenient for observation.
  4. Eclipse in China will be a week prior the Olympic Games with Opening at August 8, drawing the attention of people and law-enforcement authorities much more than the Eclipse.
And lastly, it’s a real change to see an immense and breathtaking terra incognita of Russia and to evaluate it by your own!

Well, I think the forth reason is quite lame. This Russian website is just trying to draw convince people to visite their country. Sort of a promotion or something. But in fairness, their website has a complete detail about the event, VERY detailed in fact. Lots of “nerdy” stuff which even I myself don’t really understand…
